This is a quick update that selects my highs from the past week.

Daisy Lowe
Joined by her boyfriend, major music producer Mark Ronson, at the GQ Men Of The Year Awards. The dress is dark green with lace and leaf detailing. It's so chic and is totally now - girly goth is a huge trend for August/Winter 08 (and one that I intend to keep a keen eye on).

Alexa Chung
Wearing Chanel Resort 2009 on the cover of this months Elle Magazine (UK). This dress sits so well on her, and it's great to see Alexa modeling again.

Victoria Beckham
At the launch of her new perfume - Signature For Her - in Manchester, wearing a fabulously classic Giambattista Valli Fall 2008 dress.

Denise Van Outen
And her sparkly Chanel heels also on the red carpet at the GQ Awards. These shoes are so decorative and really finished her otherwise plain outfit.

Pussycat Domination

Those darling strippers from PCD are back, and this time I'm not going to rant about the lack of clothing, generic beats or chavvy dance routines.
Oh no.
They seem to have took things up a level on the music front. Their new album "Doll Domination" is due for release Sep 20th, and everyone who's anyone will have heard the lead single - "When I Grow Up" - a catchy, fresh tune that has stormed up the charts.

Newly leaked today, an upcoming album cut - "I Hate This Part" - is beyond immense.
The lyrics, the vocals, the production, everything is perfect. It's got a nice, simple beat but soon bellows into one hell of a climax. The violins are a beautiful touch, and the way the song goes up and down so suddenly is brilliant.

The opening bars are brilliant -

"We're driving slow through the snow, On fifth avenue, And right now radio's, All that we can hear"

The chorus then slides into a breathless chant one remix short of an amazing club tune -

"I can't take it any longer, thought that we were stronger, all we do is linger, slipping through our fingers
I don't want to try now, all that's lefts goodbye to find a way that I can tell you

I hate this part right here, I hate this part right here, I just can't take your tears, I hate this part right here"

Mid-Range Heritage - Autumn 08

This is a quick look at some of the mid-range instore collections for Autumn/Winter 2008 regarding the current trend - heritage.
I looked at House of Fraser and Urban Outfitters, both renowned for high quality clothing at wallet-friendly prices.
My hunt was well rewarded, with some gorgeous warm knits and heavy tweeds from Max Mara, Lux and Firetrap and interesting jewelery from Tarina Tarantino, D&G etc.

I'm particulary loving the "snood" at Urban Outfitters. It's aim is to cover your neck, head, whatever - all with a handy drawstring. AND it's mohair. AND it's only £24. Loooovely!

The stuff here is lovely, and whoever said you need designer for comfort and quality clearly hadn't popped in for a nosy at instore collections! These days, it's almost as chic to be affordable than it is to be unaffordable (look at Jasper Conran, Betty Jackson, John Rocha!)

Heritage '08 is slowly upcoming, and is just about ready to burst onto the fashion scene. It's all about being cosy, comfy and uber-confident this Fall!

I loooove the London Underground, it's so handy to hop on and off and it's really inexpensive. London in general is fabulous, the attitude has totally lifted in recent years and the upcoming Olympics in 2012 are really helping perk everyone up. It's great to see a city where everyone seems to be getting on.
Britney CD
She's still got it! I can't wait to hear some new material. Even through the peak of her breakdown the music was at it's strongest - I'm a huge fan.
Cardigans / Tea Towel Scarfs
Ahhhh! I love these.... A nice baggy cardigan with a bright t-shirt, jeans and clashing with a scarf wrapped around me.... I love dressing bright and like to pile on as many accessories as possible. I don't like walking around in only a t-shirt, it's sometimes really unforgiving, so a cardigan is great for hiding any nasty lumps and bumps! :)
Samsung Tocco
My new phone that I love to bits. It's so touch sensitive, but I think I've figured it all out... The music playback is great and I have over 8GB memory so I can work my stuff to a multitude of songs... haha... PLUS - it looks UBER stylish!
Kermit Shoes
These trainers by Adidas are soooo ready for the bin, but I love them too much. They're neon green and really get attention. I like mixing them with other shoes (maybe one white, one of these) I love the fact Kermit is on them (I was once quite the fan), and these really stand out below black jeans. I wear them everywhere - walking, cinema, nights out.... They wash so well and are beyond comfy! They cost me over £70 but are such an investment....
Oversize Sunnies
Without them I'm nothing. They complete my holy trinity - Latte/Marlboro/Glasses - I love the whole sense of mystery that goes with them. So chic, even on a boy...
Vivienne Westwood
My favorite designer by far! She's so provocative and loud spoken. It's brilliant. We need more designers like this, she completely overhauled the New Romantic trend and is determined to create a revival. I love it.
Messenger Bags
These little things are so versatile! You can wear them across your body, or hitch up the straps and carry them under your arm like a standard bag (I alternate between the two)! They are so handy and have loads of great space in them, and they're really inexpensive. My favorite has to be a little black leather one I picked up in River Island for £60 with a New York skyline and a bright yellow taxi.

Heritage - Fall/Winter '08

I've picked out some of my favorite Heritage styles for the upcoming season. I have to say, I'm loving this look for AW08. It's bold and brilliantly British! Thick knits, tartan and leathers create a warm feeling, all with an air of upper class aristocracy. Although you may not think it now, within the next few months heritage is going to be a style that will scream "money, style and fashion".

Keep a close eye here as I see what the British High Street has to offer in response to this trend. I'll also be looking at the "instore collections" (for places like House Of Fraser, Urban Outfitters.... Cheaper than average ready-to-wear without compromising quality), such as FCUK, Zara, Betty Jackson, Jasper Conran etc to see if they can recreate some high class heritage at uber-friendly prices.

Apply very light amounts to avoid a greasy residue. If you're in a lazy mood, you can leave it in damp hair overnight and wake up to find yourself with silky smooth locks. Touch-up during the day when needed. This is heaven sent!

Pantene Pro-V Ice Shine Shampoo
With shampoo, I really just want something to clean my hair, none of this 2-in-1 nonsense. This shampoo is great because you really feel stripped back afterward without some overwhelming minty smells lingering on your scalp.

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Peach Conditioner
This is perfect for lifting highlights, adding new dimensions to flat layers and even just for given your hair a deep condition and get some moisture back in there. It's brilliant!

Round Brush
The ultimate must-have! Inexpensive but oh-so-useful. Team with a hairdryer and create your own salon style at home.

"ghd" Hair Straighteners
I love these! Yes, they're pricey, but for a good set of hair irons it's worth the money. These are a sound investment for anyone who often styles their hair. Face the facts - those Babyliss Tongs aren't doing anyone any good.

Trevor Sorbie Goop
This is an unusual product... If a serum and a wax had a lovechild, "goop" would be the outcome. I find this is too heavy for day use, but if you've just arrived home and are getting ready to go out at night, a quick touch up with the straighteners and a small scoop of this can really transform a look.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Spray
This is a gentle spritz for taming any unruly curls and will bode you over from lunchtime to evening. It's not sticky and won't leave any residue like a traditional hairspray.

Andrew Colligne Heat Defense Spray
Does exactly what it says on the tin! If you're going to be using hairdryers/irons etc on a daily basis, this is a must have. Helps strengthen to hair, thus avoiding any breakages or split ends.

Album Review - Sol-Angel & The Hadley St. Dreams

The highly anticipated breakout album from Solange Knowles (Beyonce's little sister, FYI) has finally arrived.
I'm beyond impressed.
First thoughts (regarding album art): She appears to have got lost somewhere between Camden and Kentish Town (perhaps this is the elusive Hadley Street....!?!)... Jumble yard chic is back!

The music speaks for itself - "I'm not her and never will be", she croons on the opening track "God Given Name" - a comeback to those Beyonce comparisons - "Let my star shine on it's own, no I'm no sister". That's fighting talk coming from a girl who's debut album flopped back in 2002.

The album continues in a similar vain with bold, retro-inspired tracks mixed with soulful ballads. Production from Cee-Lo Green and Mark Ronson only enhances an already solid album. Ronson's trademark instrumentals are heard throughout "Dancing In The Dark", a mid-tempo tune with a surprisingly catchy chorus and middle eight.

"T.O.N.Y" is a strong contender for single number three. The instrumental is smooth and sensual, allowing Solange's voice to range from a gentle sway to a strong belt. The build up to the chorus comes naturally, whilst the actual chorus itself glides out with understated passion. Give it a few listens and you'll be hooked.

"6 O'Clock Blues" has some impressive harmonies, all delivered in a laid back manner, whilst "Would Have Been The One" is a stomping, clap-along tune that allows Solange to roar, scream, sing and speak her way through some feisty lyrics.

The only downside to this album is "Ode To Marvin", which, although is pleasant enough, never seems to gather enough momentum to become something close to memorable. This is the only filler, and even though it certainly isn't awful, it's just a strong contrast to some of the quality music on this album.

Solange has an impressive voice, from the deep growls of "Sandcastle Disco" through to the high screams during the climax of "I Decided".
This is an album that appeals to the masses, Knowles' style bounces between Amy Winehouse, Freemasons, Donna & The Supremes and more (often on one track, such as the lush electro-soul-pop that is "Cosmic Journey" - a must listen), which altogether helps mould ...Hadley St. Dreams into a solid package.

Unexpected, Brassy and Fun, this is a solid launch for Solange to prove she's much more than a backup if Destiny's Child ever fall short on a member.
Knowles' style is outrageously independent, and we're long overdue this sort of music in Britain.

I'm determined to stretch this summer out one-step-further. We might not have the weather, but that's no excuse for not having the attitude!

Katie Holmes keeps it casually cool out and about in New York by mixing baggy jeans, trilby hats, comfy cardigans, flats with a ridiculously lavish handbag. Her naturally femininity shines through, even when she's at her most casual.

Holmes' summer style is going one step beyond bohemian chic, and I love the entire "thrown together but still working it with my leather and coffee" look. She's certainly upped the ante.

What's in a name? I've took it upon myself to investigate the social phenomenon that is "smelling like a celeb". You have to admit, when you see J.Lo running around spritzing herself with the self-declared "it" fragrance, you're desperate for it. It's all a part of the idea that we can identify ourselves, and thus bring ourselves closer, to the elite celeb inner circle. No?

With this tongue-in-cheek (or should that be "chic"?) piece, I'll examine what those fancy fragrances say about their sponsor, and also the consumer, ie. -you.

There's light at the end of the tunnel and all that, Believe is an inner light shining out with hopeful tinges of tangerine, honeysuckle and pink pralines.

Precious Jewel - Ashanti
This scent is Ashanti's way of keeping her precious jewels (family, friends) close at heart. Sickly sweet with masses of fruit, lily of the valley etc.

As if we didn't know that Kylie was a walking, talking bag of sequins, this fragrance will only further prove it.

It'sJ.Lo, reminding us it's her world and we're lucky to live in it. This fruity, fabulous fragrance embraces her luxury life with the crisp top notes of apple, melon and citrus taking centre stage. You can almost taste that last cocktail in St. Tropez. Mmmm.
WEAR THIS: If you also like to live luxe. Diva demands and sexy smells - just do it.

Covet - Sarah-Jessica-Parker
Carrie Bradshaw, as she's informally known, has launched this dark, mysterious evening fragrance. Perfect for a stroll down the side streets of Studio 69, or alternatively a night at the Opera. This scent exudes confidence and ambition.
WEAR THIS: If you have it all - success, fame and fortune but still covet more. Ambition in a bottle.

Diamonds - Beyonce Knowles
This scent is clean, crisp and well-cut. Like a diamond, you needn't use fancy tricks for attention. This is subtle enough to let you take centre stage by yourself.
WEAR THIS: If you can match the confidence and experience of Beyonce. Put your best foot forward and sparkle on your own.

Shh - Jade Goody
This one speaks for itself. Overly sweet, it screams rather than whispers.
WEAR THIS: If you're loud, brassy and beyond-bold. This bargain scent is bound to work brilliantly for you. Tone it down with this vile smelling fragrance.

VERDICT
My choice at the minute - Live Luxe. It's bold, confident and fabulously luxurious. Live the high life, it IS still summer after all.

Granny Chic @ Topshop!

For any Kate Nash or Peaches Geldof wannabe, "Granny Chic" is definitely the trend to follow.

Think big, baggy knits, floral floaty blouses, puffball/a-line knee-length skirts, corsages, ballet pumps, skinny belts, cute messenger bags and pearl brooches. In other words - Park Avenue meets Camden Market.

Office Chic on the highstreet? I hear you fashionistas thinking that surely you can't be successful without that staple Chanel suit?
Think again.
Ditch the drab old trouser suit and squeeze those hips into a flattering pencil skirt - they work well with multiple body types (and with a little help from some fabulous granny-pants, yours too!)
The "in colour" this season is red, so I've tried to add a few splashes of this trend with some high-impact accessories. The heels by Asos are admittedly the most expensive element to this outfit, but they are truly magnificent!
I picked a simple black tote and gold jewellery (ties in with belt detailing), so as not to overplay the colour scheme. My main aim with this look was to create something professional, fashionable, clean and classy. Uncluttered style is a must-have within the workplace.

Let's hear a cry of "here come the girls" - get the lipgloss on and the navy trousers out! Who ever said a woman can't be smart, successful and sexy?

Science & Fashion Collide

Hand-carved from Lucite, a transparent plastic, this creation from Blue Tree NYC is actually a bag with fully operating lights, embedded within the piece. This retails at £500.

The website says:

"These bags come with a cloth insert so they can actually be used."

I still haven't decided if this is a beauty, or a beautiful disaster. I'll get back to you on that.

When Soda Gets Serious

Roberto Cavalli has redesigned 300,000 Coca Cola Light bottles to be launched next month.

The limited edition drinks are an interesting concept... Cavalli has already launched his own Vodka, whilst Yves Saint Laurent has their own cigarettes (admittedly - a must have within the fashion world!)

It just makes you wonder when this all turns into a gimmick.

Having said that, the bottles themselves are beyond fierce. :)

Trend Alert! - Tomato Red

This Autumn/Winter, It's all about being the lady in red! Tomato has made a big comeback and prepare to see this trend trickle down the high street any given day now.

But before you go running to deck yourself in a full ballerina skirt, bear in mind that you're not a couture model on a catwalk. One statement piece or accessory is enough to stand out.

Office chic? Easy! Ditch the white blouse and pop on a ruffled red version to create a maximum impact in the workplace.

Less is always more... Use a shocking red pair of heels, a bracelet or necklace alongside that LBD. Keep it clean and uncluttered.

On the other hand, if you are wearing a red dress or other key piece, forget matching accessories altogether.

Top Tip: Glossy metallics, bedazzling jewelry and dramatic makeup can help overhaul this trend into an impressive evening look.

In Focus: Coco Chanel

During the 1910's Coco Chanel revolutionized women's fashion. She designed pieces that embodied style, class, independence, comfort, success, personality and confidence.

In 1921 she launched Chanel No. 5 - the first perfume to bare her name. One of Coco Chanel's most famous quotes is, "This perfume is not just beautiful and fragrant. It contains my blood and sweat and a million broken dreams."
It was this that helped her become a millionaire, and what gave her the freedom to continue creating under the Chanel label.
The scent was famously worn by Marilyn Monroe, who once remarked - "All I wear in bed is Chanel No. 5".
Its Art Deco bottle was incorporated into the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1959.

The iconic Chanel Suit was launched in 1924. A knee length skirt, boxy jacket made from woven wool, embroidered with contrasting colours and finished off with pearls became every woman's staple piece.

The little-black-dress was next. A versatile, backless, sleeveless dress that shocked the nation for being too risque, but soon became a sensation. The idea of a blank canvas appealed to those who wanted an outfit that could be worn in the day and night. The Chanel dress premiered in the third ever edition of Playboy. This only added to the controversy surrounding the Chanel name.

The company's logo soon became as famous as the clothes. Girls across the globe were eager to flash those two intertwining C's. The label quickly became an icon for those with class and taste.
All of her clothes were emblazoned with the famous Chanel symbol; this, however, was not of her own design. The symbol was given to her by the owner of the Chateau de Cremat. In 1923, she told Harper's Bazaar that "simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance."

The cost of a Chanel Piece was extravagant, even in those days. Seeing as money means everything to the typical Chanel girl, because along with it comes power, success, sex and independence.

Coco Chanel revolutionized haute couture fashion by replacing the traditional corseted silhouette with the comfort of simple suits and long, lean dresses. The years of the 1920s and 1930s will best be remembered as the era of Coco whose simpler lines of women's couture led to the popular "flat-chested" look of the 1920s.
Her clothing were relaxed and changed that way women dressed for outdoor leisure. Coco omitted corsetts, liberating women and creating more comfort. For that she is forever remembered.

In London, the options are endless! Spend a Saturday on the "ultimate highstreet" that is Oxford Street, and your Sunday can be spent at the "ultimate flea-market" - Camden Lock.

For those that seem themselves as an "alternative individual", Camden Town is a must-see! Experience a punk-revival at the Lock Market by digging out some vintage leopard prints, leather jackets, chains and badges - let yourself go in the ever-popular "scene"-crowd.
You will be so busy looking at all the colourful folk around you that you might forget you were here to shop! Take the tube to Camden for an unforgettable experience. There are masses of nice places to stop and take a break for a coffee, if you can manage the weekend queues, otherwise run up to M&S Express for a quick-fix to go!

Portobello Road is well worth a visit for all-things-unique. From pubs to clubs, and clothing to cabbages, this market has it all. Enjoy a few hours browsing the endless array of bric-a-brac (if you have the patience), and you could leave with some real steals!

Every Saturday there's a collectors market near the Charing Cross tube station for people who collect postcards, stamps, coins, cigarette cards etc. I wasn't very interested, but I'm sure there's some people who would kill to get their hands on some of this gear.

Visit the boutique of Shizue Nobuta, a handbag designer who makes many one-off creations.
They are rather eccentric and certainly my style, and everything is really nice to look at, although the prices are not exactly in my comfort zone.
Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears, are known to be customers, and if you want to try spotting some celebs - this is the area. There's an uber-glam hair salon across the road where the rich and famous like to get their colours done!

Let your head go and get lost in the glamor that is a London Shopping Trip. You'll be beyond surprised at how unoriginal it all can be.

Real Pirates Of The Carribean

In between searching for the cheapest hotel in Glasgow (it just isn't happening), and fighting the urge to get properly dressed and do something, I came across this...

A video called "Real Pirates Of The Carribean", a short film from internationally famous artist/musician - M.I.A
The video showcases her new fashion collection, as yet unreleased.

The pieces follow the artwork of her 2007 album, "Kala", by using bright, garish colours alongside retro, pixelated images and patterns.
These prints have also been used throughout her self-directed music videos.
She has said this style has come through inspiration from Nigerian bootleg CDs and DVDs.

M.I.A has always shown an interest in fashion - she often wears self-made clothes, her mother is a seamstress and she once lived with designer Luella Bartley.

Personally, I love these clothes! Very different and eye-catching...
It's unlike anything we've seen in years, and it's solely due to M.I.A's own personal experiences and her culture. I love the idea that some fashion can tell a story (such as the Prada Fairy Bag I mentioned earlier...), and that's exactly what's happening here.

In Focus: "The pop landscape post-Maneater"

In 2006, when Nelly Furtado sang those opening lines of -

"everybody look at meh meh... i walk through the doors ya start scream-ing...", little did she know that she wasn't only reinventing herself, she was reinventing pop music as we know it.

Declared as "the pop landscape post-Maneater", the past three years has been awash with similar tracks. Ever since July 2006, manufactured pop died. This is 2008, an era of talent and substance. It takes more than a pretty face these days.

Thick ethnic beats, electronic undertones and layered vocals dominate our music collections. The mastermind behind this combination is the now legendary Timbaland.

He helped launch Aaliyah, Destiny's Child and Missy Elliot with generic hip/hop beats. It wasn't until the 200o's that his own unique style was formed.

"Maneater" is his statement track to date. He saved Nelly Furtado from the brink of obscurity, and in effect launched himself as an international force. Later work with Justin Timberlake, Pussycat Dolls and Jay-Z helped establish the brand.

His remix of OneRepublic's "Apologize" is another great highlight of his career. He propelled the band mainstream in 2007, and they have since gone on to release a critically acclaimed debut album.

Keri Hilson, Danja Hills and D.O.E have all clung to Timbaland's coat tail as he moves up in the business. This collection of young musicians later became "The Clutch", a highly respected production company that has gave a helping hand to nearly everyone on the Billboard Chart.

Timbaland's unique production has gone mainstream. Tracks are flying left, right and centre. Club friendly favorites such as "Promiscuous Girl", "SexyBack" and "The Way I Are" are currently dominating the airways, but this soon will change. Music moves forward, and unless Timbaland and The Clutch can forecast the future, it won't be long before their unique blend of genres is deemed unworthy of airplay.

It was great for a while, but, progressing into 2009, it's all beginning to sound the same. You can't help but wonder when enough is enough.

She's Norwegian, fabulously talented and is determined to bring some quirky-pop to the British charts.

There's no denying Victoria's sense of fashion. She laughs off ideas of hiring a stylist, and has opted to get stuck in and try her own hand at it: "She always tries on an outfit, irregardless", says one insider.

Beckham's style is traditional Vogue. By this I mean it's cool, clean and couture. She does, however, add her own certain je ne sais pas. Thick belts and flashes of neon add a much more British approach to her style. It's this experimental individualism that gives Victoria her own distinct image.

She first exploded onto the scene as "Posh Spice" in the world-famous Spice Girls. Her style was clean and not-at-all overtly sexy. She was the girl who was often in the shadows behind larger-than-life characters Geri Halliwell and Melanie Brown. With the ten year anniversary of Diana's death fresh in our minds, it's easy enough to compare the two women - both are considered international British icons by the average UK female.

Janice Dickinson, however, finds the "Posh as new Diana" theory ridiculous - " I think she should gain a little weight. With all due respect, you want an icon, give me Princess Diana. I don't get this."

A "Diana for the new millenium" or not, there's no denying Vicky's role as the modern woman. Nowadays she's more famous for her sense of style rather than that of her music career. She's hailed as a fashionista, an icon that we can all look up to with green eyes of envy.

In reality, she's so much more: a mother, a wife, a singer, a fashion designer, an author, an actress, an eccentric and a paparazzi-field-day - Beckham is up alongside Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy and Coco Chanel as one of the strongest women of our time.

This limited editon "Fairy Bag" is causing quite the stir within fashion circles.

The bag is a continuation of Prada's "Trembled Blossoms": a radical collaboration with James Jean, inspired by Japanese Manga.
The duo first premiered a video short at the spring/summer show. (See below)

I respect the way that Miuccia Prada always follows her own creativity and ignores what "everyone else is doing".

Personally, I love how edgy and dynamic this piece is, and predict it to be a brilliant collector's item. This is so much more than a bag, it's a piece of art that goes beyond visual admiration - you can live your life in it.

Miley, Hannah Montana, whatever you want to call her (or say about her), there's no denying how well she's doing for herself - bringing in $1 Million a week!

There's one question on everyone's lips - is she the next Britney Spears? She too was a young, southern girl that appealed to millions of young fans.
The only difference is that this time around it seems even bigger!

Here she is on Good Morning America wearing an ensemble I'm surprisingly impressed with.

Even at 15 year olds, she's successfully pulling off cowgirl-chic in tiny denim hotpants and that gorgeous pleated shirt. Those boots are to die for, and she's showing just enough leg not to scare any mothers in the audience.

(Top Tip: Slouchy, baggy, cowgirl shirts are set to do big-business on the high street this Autumn/Winter - just look at Amy Winehouse and Agyness Deyn)

In terms of her career, Miley's new album "Breakout" is due for release this month, and I must (somewhat shamefully) admit that I love it.

Her songs are a mix of pop/rock and are brimming with that genre of angst that could fit perfectly alongside an Avril Lavigne, P!nk or Kelly Clarkson record.

Stand out tracks include - "Breakout", "Bottom Of The Ocean", a risque version of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and the lead single (posted below) - "7 Things".

She's Lovin' Us Long Time...

Following the massive success of Mariah Carey's debut fragrance - "M" - she hasn't wasted any time in launching her second scent - "Luscious Pink".

The scent is described as a "sparkling floral", and is apparently "above-and-beyond the call of duty".

With top notes of - "Sicilian bergamot, Ocean Breeze accord and sparkling Bellini accord; a heart of Tahitian Tiare petals, lily of the valley and pink peony, and a drydown of bright blond woods, creamy sandalwood and white musk."

Carey was inspired for this perfume by the Harajuku Girls of Tokyo, with their feminine innocence of youth.

Only time will tell if these top notes can reach those of Mariah herself.

Valentino's Last Bow - Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer '08

It was the most dramatic farewell in fashion history as Valentino Garavani gave his last bow at Paris fashion week.
After 45 years in the business, he retired last month, but not before one last appearance.
Hailed by critics as a success, the show included multiple designs, fabrics, and colour schemes.
His collection of candyfloss dresses (pictured left) all brought different trends to the runway, including sequins, belted waists, ruffles, bows and plunging necklines. All the pieces from this range were paired with unique, handmade sandals, secured by day-glow ribbon.

Sunshine yellow, mint green, strong shoulders and polka dots all gelled together on the runway. His ready-to-wear pieces are all fresh, funky and fashionable.
One key piece, a vintage-inspired trench coat, is pulled back to this decade through the use of bold, primary colours and flash metallic accessories.The bow detail draws attention to the waist, meanwhile the front split leaves an elegant flash of thigh (and a lot to your imagination).
Complimentary to the female form, and oh-so-chic, each piece was designed by Valentino and his team to cater for the modern woman’s needs in 2008.

Sticking to a more traditional agenda, Valentino also premiered his black and white designs for spring/summer. With these chiffon blouses, puffy shoulders and well fitted skirts, I can't help but reminisce of Julia Roberts a la “Pretty Woman”…
It’s only appropriate that Valentino’s final display was also one of his strongest. All of the pieces pictured here are available from the start of 2008 and are guaranteed to fly off the shelves.

Pouting a la Paris!

That first warm May evening I stumbled into Charles de Gaulle airport, cluelessly wandering around with a massive cappuccino in one hand, Marlboro light in the other, wearing my massive sunglass and a complete lack of direction.

It wasn’t soon before long that I found myself conversing with the locals, strutting downtown and living a life of leisure. This is my crash-course for anyone wanting to pout whilst in Paris.

“The City Of Lights”… Unfriendly? Occasionally. Of course, this wasn’t such a big deal when I finally got to see the fashion fashion fashion! With boys dressed as girls, and girls dressed in Dior, Paris is the place to see, and in return - be seen. The Parisians love compliments, and if you take the time to admire a bag or pair of shoes, you could find yourself with some new company and a glass of champagne quicker than you can say “couture”.

With the lights of the Arc de Triomphe illuminating my every step, an evening stroll

down the Champs-Élysées proved to be quite the glamorous

event. With the world’s biggest Louis Vuitton store taking pride of place, the world hails this avenue a fashion mecca.

Dior, Gucci, De La Rente and, of course, Chanel, can all be found here, weaved throughout the endless stream of cafes and bars.

Top tip: avoid eating or drinking here, prices are ridiculous and the food isn‘t great. If you slip down a side street, there are some truly gorgeous, cheap places to be found (try “Olive et Balsamic”, Rue Quentin Bauchart, literally just a hop and skip away).

Forget the Eiffel Tower, it’s an over-glamorised two hour queue, and the complete lack of perspective and visibility at the top somewhat dampened my spirits. If you really want an impressive sight, try the Sacre-Coeur at night. The steps leading to the basilica are always heaving with musicians, dancers and the occasional fire breather. Tourists and locals gather with some vin de blanc, and peacefully enjoy the night, rounded off with a panoramic illuminated view of Paris!

The Louvre is pleasant, if only to quickly glance at the Mona Lisa (if you can manage to push past those loud-mouthed American tourists). Some of Delacroix’s pieces are also worth a visit and, of course, the Venus de Milo is another must-see.

But if you’re looking for expressionism or impressionism, skip the Louvre entirely and head straight to Musée d'Orsay for a look at some of Van Gogh and Monet’s work.

If you want to experience some sauce, slink down to the red light district: Pigalle, and visit the Moulin Rouge. It’s pricey and spilling with tourists, but nonetheless will provide some great entertainment. Next door, La Loco is an amazing nightclub with multi-levels and music until 6am. Feel free to let your hair down; the prices are reasonable and celebrities drop in regularly. However, be warned, this end of town can get very seedy, especially at night. A taxi home is more than advisable.

For those wanting to recapture the culture and charisma of an older Paris, visit the Latin Quarter. With some gorgeous views, quaint bookshops, vintage clothes shops and homely cafes, this is a meeting place for some of the city’s top intellectuals. Be warned though, at night fire breathers dominate the streets and tourists tend to flock around the bright lights of the Notre Dame, somewhat dampening the chance of a retro relaxation.

Finally, some key things to remember in Paris: get the metro (it’s fast, cheap and always on time), never wear a fanny pack (a crime in itself), dress stylish but sensible (the heat can get unbearable), call into Louis (that shop really is remarkable), enjoy the Moet, and perhaps my most important tip - bring me with you.

It's Banging!

They say Kate Moss started it last October, now everyone wants a fuller fringe (aka - Bangs).

So far this year Gwen Stefani, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys and Melanie C have all been spotted with a fuller, blunt fringes.

Here’s Vanessa Hudgens, famous for High School Musical, sporting her own full fringe.

A full fringe can be great for creating a daytime look. It’s easy and flattering, so why not try it yourself?

Top Tips:

1 - Never cut it yourself. Your hand isn’t that steady, trust me.

2 - A fuller fringe with fine hair looks awful! Extensions are always possible, but if you haven’t got enough hair to start with, I wouldn’t advise you try it.

3 - Round faces, beware the full fringe... It will bloat you and explode out your jaw line! Avoid!

4 - Don’t use a round brush! Let the fringe fall naturally in a messy style (a la Kate), to avoid it looking overworked.

5 - Long styles are tres chic… Trim just below the eyebrows and regularly get it tidied up.

6 - Use a light water based serum to keep the hair in good condition… Serums are great for tidying your hair without leaving a greasy residue. Use throughout the day to keep your fringe looking fresh.

Talent Watch: Solange Knowles

Solange has already created a small following, partially due to her family ties with big sister Beyonce, and her involvement with the “Bring It On” movies.

Now it’s time for Baby-B to step into the limelight, with her first mainstream album - “Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams”.

The project has been produced by household names Mark Ronson, Cee-Lo and The Neptunes, and is set to bode well with the public.

Said to a be a throwback to the 60’s, this album is sure to go down well with anyone seeking a refuge from the shrieking cries of Duffy or Amy Winehouse. Solange’s style is cool, sophisticated soul, more “Diana and The Supremes” than “Destiny’s Child”…

The lead single “I Decided“ is a retro groove with a surprising amount of body to it. Freemasons have overhauled it for a European-friendly remix, and it’s sure to go down well with British music lovers. The beats and smooth chorus make for a hypnotically catchy summer track…

Be sure to check out another one of her tracks, “Sandcastle Disco”, this quirky slice of pop/soul/R&B is essential for any music collection in 2008. The verses are thoughtfully quirky - “I’m a cool old Jane with a skip on my feet, I play tough as nails with my heart on my sleeve, Nothing but a sandcastle, baby don’t blow me away…”… - and the chorus is a polished piece of pop. Cee-Lo’s production is evident throughout, and Solange’s vocals are really quite magnificent. Her voice resonates in a way Beyonce cannot manage: Solange mightn’t have the range, but she certainly has the soul.

Be sure to keep an eye out for her in the next few months: her single - “I Decided (Freemasons Remix)” - is being sent to UK radio at the end of July.

Review:

Sex And The City

One of the most hyped movies of our time, “Sex And The City” has been four years in the making, and has finally arrived to the big screen.

An extension of the now retired television series, “SATC” is a cultural phenomenon that has touched the hearts of females and fashion lovers everywhere.

Set in New York, the television series concentrated on the lives of Charlotte, Samantha, Miranda and the central character - Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker).

The show followed the ups and down of love and friendship, all within the uber-stylish bubble that is Manhattan.

The movie is just over two and half hours (which seems like an extreme length, but you’ll be surprised at how easily it passes), and is set 4 years after we last said goodbye to the girls.

Carrie is getting caught up in her romance of Mr. Big, with plans of marriage and house hunts spiralling out of control. Miranda has her own relationship problems with Steve, whilst on the other hand Charlotte is blissfully enjoying marriage and motherhood.

Vixen of the group, Samantha Jones, is busy commuting between L.A and NYC, but it’s not just physically she’s moving around. Has her time with Smith, now internationally famous, come to an end?

Jennifer Hudson is one particular highlight, playing Carrie’s assistant - "Louise from St. Louis". Her feisty one liners add a fresh comedic dimension to the film.

One main theme within the plot is forgiveness, and whether it be with a lover or friend, the writer’s have perfectly touched upon it. Be prepared for some major waterworks!

The soundtrack is suitably funky and full bodied, with some old classics - Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” and Morningwood‘s “New York Girls”, alongside brand new tracks including “Labels or Love” by Fergie, and “All Dressed Up In Love” (used during the final scenes), by Jennifer Hudson.

The fashion is just as outrageous as before, with Patricia Field once again steering the outfit choices for Carrie and the girls. Over 300 ensembles were used throughout, and each character had her own distinct style. The product placement was sometimes overbearing, but it's this outrageously unattainable glamor that caused us to love SATC in the first place, so I'll forgive the producers for this one money-making-method...

The girls have aged well, but there appears to be a certain stiffness that was absent during the TV show. Perhaps it has emerged from the rumoured backstage riffs between the actresses?

Ignoring all these small issues, the movie is vibrant, funny, moving and creative. This is sure to do big-bucks at the Box Office, and already has a huge cult following.

Verdict? Go see ASAP! In the words of a certain Ms. Bradshaw, this movie is “just fabulous!”

High Fashion on the High Street

This Chanel knee-length, silk crepe dress incorporates practical, daytime glamour with just a touch of “Park Avenue princess“.

Once again knee-length, this linen sundress by Dorothy Perkins follows this season’s must have colour trend - “midnight”. A very simple dress keeping that pinched waist to elongate and shape the wearer.

The pleated lower-half has a nice finish, adding a sense of personality to a rather bland piece.

Team with a metallic patent leather handbag , appropriate for daytime/evening wear, modernising this outfit with just a hint of glamour.

Sequined sandals or heels will further glamorize this dress and will help break-up the lower half of this look.

Finally, accessorise with a unique piece of jewellery, such as a large necklace. Ribbon, large gems and trailing chains will add a vintage, Chanel-esque finish to this summer outfit. You can afford to use big accessories on such a bland dress.

TOP TIP: In a similar manner to Chanel’s use of two-tone, add a skinny, silver belt around the torso to further accentuate that shaped waist!

If your budget can stretch further than mine, why not steal Beyonce’s style and get a pair of those £2000 Balenciaga heels! She wore them to the American Music Awards, and they’ve already received tons of attention! Even Kanye West has felt compelled to blog about them!

Top Tips:

1 - Never do rainbow on rainbow. You’ll look ridiculous.

2 - Try using your imagination! A little creativity will work wonders. Use earrings/bracelets, scarves, bags, belts and even ribbon to help break up the outfit!

3 - Rainbow looks best on simple clothes, black is a brilliant contrast.

4 - Don’t over-do it! Too much can look garish. The less you use, the more impact it will have.

She's the hottest theatrical exhibitionist to hit us this year; Lady Gaga is the ultimate disco-ball-loving-diva, with a taste for the extreme. Personal fetishes include shoulder pads, sequins and sunglasses. Her bleach blonde locks scream "Paris Hilton", whereas her clear understanding of music production and songwriting strongly contrasts this airhead persona.

Her style is a mixture of Madonna/Queen/Christina Aguilera/David Bowie, and these radically different influences can be heard throughout her lead single - "Just Dance".

The song celebrates a "fun, L.A. celebratory vibe", says Gaga.

Expect to hear it pumping through the speakers of a club near you soon!
